UPVC vs aluminium windows: which is right for your house?

An honest comparison of UPVC and aluminium windows — sightlines, cost, insulation, lifespan and which suits which kind of property.

New windows fitted to a house

The short version

UPVC costs less and insulates very well. Aluminium is stronger, so the frames are slimmer and you get more glass in the same hole. Both will last decades if they're fitted properly.

Sightlines

This is the real difference. Aluminium's strength means a much narrower frame, so a big window looks like a window rather than a frame with glass in it. On a large opening the difference is obvious. On a small bedroom window, far less so.

Cost

Aluminium typically costs meaningfully more per window. Whether it's worth it depends on where the windows are — plenty of people do aluminium at the back where the big openings are, and UPVC at the front and upstairs.

Insulation

Modern UPVC insulates excellently. Aluminium needs a thermal break to match it, and any decent system has one. Both comfortably beat what they're replacing if your current windows are twenty years old.

Colour and finish

Aluminium is powder-coated and available in any RAL colour, and it holds that finish very well. UPVC comes in a wide range of foils including woodgrains and anthracite grey.

So which?

If budget is the deciding factor, UPVC — it's not a compromise, it's a well-proven product. If you've got large openings, want minimal frame, or you're matching a contemporary extension, aluminium earns its money.
